太極
for unaccompanied SATB Choir
ca. 5’00”
《太極》(2023) takes inspiration from the ancient Chinese martial art of Tai Chi. I was particularly entranced by Tai Chi's slow, deliberate movements and its focus on creating "flow"——elements that I aimed to capture in the music. Also central to Tai Chi is the concept of "yinyang" (陰陽), or "light/dark": opposing but interconnected forces present in the universe.
《太極》was commissioned by my good friends, the Diocesan Choral Society; Ronnie Kay-yen Cheng, conductor.
Text: 取自《太極拳論》— 王宗岳
