pocketed
for solo piano
ca. 2’30”
pocketed (2019) is a short piano etude written during my time at the Brevard Music Center in North Carolina. Composed for the piano etude project led by Professor Jihye Chang (Florida State University), this piece was ultimately chosen by Prof. Chang to tour around the United States in her recitals during the 2019-2020 school year. This rhythmically challenging two-and-a-half-minute piece takes a groovy, syncopated bassline and fills in the gaps with an angular, jazzy melody. The metric shifts add a sense of danger and unpredictability. The final section features bold octaves in the right hand in counterpoint to the strong, earthy bassline, and pushes the piece towards its exciting climax.
