荼蘼 - The Last Blossom
for violin, cello, and piano
ca. 6’00”
荼蘼花 (Rubus coronarius): A member of the rose family, this Asian species of flower plant holds an important place in Chinese culture as it is often thought to be the last flower to blossom in spring. It is considered to be one of the loneliest flowers in Buddhist philosophy – its presence signals the death of spring flowers as they make way for the summer. The flower’s elegant, delicate appearance is a reminder that it is only in moments of sadness where we can find true beauty and, therefore, it is only near death when we can find beauty in life.
